Tips for Full Time Mothers Looking to Return to the Practice of Law

The July 2007 issue of the ABA Journal has an article in which work life balance expert Diane Vogt provides advice to Tammy Von Buck, a young mother who left the practice of law to focus on full time motherhood, but remains committed to returning to the legal world at least part time in 2-3 years when her children start school (after a 7-year absence). The steps recommended by Vogt include meeting with attorneys in fields (such as estate planning or zoning) that have piqued Von Buck's interest, and finding out what they like - and don't like - about their practices, and what it would take to secure a job in their specialty. Once Von Buck settles on a specialty, taking CLE courses would help her get up to speed on the latest issues in that area of law.
